FM.10.28.2006.1.jpg - Farmer Dorothy Hess awaits customers as she stands in front the Hess family farm truck near four full rows of her homegrown mums. By the end of the day over three fourths of the mums were sold. Dorothy and her husband Oliver have been farmers for over forty years, and currently grow vegetables and flowers at their home in Logan County, Kentucky.

FM.10.28.2006.4.jpg - Farmer and mother of seven, Dorothy Hess. The Hess’s are Mennonites and are originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They currently make their home in Logan County, Kentucky where they grow their locally famous hearty mums.

FM.10.28.2006.5.jpg - Oliver Hess picks up the remaining mums to load onto his truck at the end of the market. The Saturday market shuts down around 12:00 pm, and any unsold mums will be returned to the Hess home outside of Russellville, Kentucky.

FM.10.28.2006.7.jpg - Once the market closes at 12:00 pm, Dorothy Hess sweeps up the mums that have fallen off the potted plants throughout the day. In the background the O’Daniels load up their market stand. The market takes place in the parking lot of the Fairview shopping center, and the number nine space where Dorothy sweeps up has been their regular location each week for the last three years.

FM.10.28.2006.9.jpg - Joe O’Daniel, Oliver Hess and Dorothy Hess visit at the end of the market day. To the right of the truck you can see the McDonald’s arches and to the left a large Midas sign. The market is located in the back corner of a large strip mall/shopping center. Farmers often visit with one another after their stands are dismantled and packed away.
